I came up with, “Garbage Pail Care Bears”, while messaging with my good friend Megs about a mutual acquaintance who has gone and is going through so much in her personal life, and yet is unwaveringly positive and cheerful.
Megs wrote, “Pretty sure she’s better than all of us.”
I bucked at that. I replied, “She seems like such a truly kind and loving person.
“Better than all of us, eh, better than most of us, at least.
“I think you and I have enough empathy and emotional maturity to compete, at least. We’re not all sunshine and rainbows, but we support people in our own ways, and with just as much sincerity as [acquaintance] puts forth.
“If the three of us teamed up we’d be the garbage pail care bears.”
The three of us didn’t team up, but others did and will.
I want simple but important things from this site. I want people I love to write whatever they want about whatever they want to write about. I want to be supportive and to be supported. I want to invest in my friendships and in my community, and I think this site will help me in my endeavors.
As a garbage pail care bear, here are my self-assessed stats:
- Alcoholic: 7/10
- ADHD: 10/10
- PTSD: 5/10
- Anxiety: 7/10
- Intelligence: 7/10
- Empathy: 8/10
- Ability to demonstrate empathy: 2/10
My special garbage pail care bear power is I can drunkenly pay a sincere and validating compliment that doesn’t sound great. Example: “Of course you’re depressed. Your life sucks. I would not want to be you. I’m impressed you’re doing as well as you are.”
